The show is a veritable songbook of American show tunes: close to three dozen familiar and affecting melodies from such classics as West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, Company, and Follies. The music and lyrics evoke a witty sophistication, through themes from marriage to soul-searching to contemporary city life – the crème-de-la-crème of Broadway’s best and a tribute to Broadway’s most innovative and influential artist.
Born in New York City in 1930, Stephen Sondheim became entranced by music and theatre at an early age. Side by Side by Sondheim, which premiered in London in 1976, takes its inspiration from the composer’s earlier work, interwoven with compositions by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers, and Jule Styne. It ran in the West End for nearly three years, then transferred to Broadway for a run of over a year. Over the past three decades numerous productions have been mounted, both in this country and abroad, to considerable and on-going acclaim.
